Great essay Bud! Really enjoyed reading this. Although I’m years away from being a parent, the ideas you share in this essay are something I’ve thought about a lot. These closing lines really stuck with me:

“Patience and a willingness to learn from the souls we’ve nurtured are the compass and map.

It’s the evolution from guardian to guide.”

This is something I’ll need to revisit in 25-30 years 😅

Hey Jack, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this essay!

The funny thing about parenting is sometimes it’s like the quote by Mike Tyson - “everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” The key for me has been sticking with my values, but continuing to grow, adapt, and evolve.

A great quote and an even better life philosophy you just laid out: adapt as needed but stick to your values. That’s one to live by.

Hey Bud I loved the idea around guides not guardians! Reminds me of Jordan Peterson's idea of letting kids fall off their skateboards. It's really commendable that you're encouraging them to pursue their own curiosity.

Thanks! I sometimes joke that I was a first-generation "latch key kid" who learned a lot of things the hard way. Somehow I survived all of the stupid stunts my best friend and I tried.

My college and career plans took unexpected turns, but it worked out well. I ended up here because of those experiences. I want my kids to have the freedom to find their own paths.

Great essay, Bud! Love how you liken the shift from guardians to guides to “letting go of the bike for the first time.” Talk about coming full circle. Beautiful analogy!

Thanks for reading it Alexandra! Letting go of the bike is just one of the mind movies that plays in my head when I reach milestones with my kids - like during my oldest daughter’s wedding last year.
